Memorial Day in Rochester, MA!

Memorial Day Weekend was a busy time in Rochester, MA.  The Memorial Day Parade kicked off from the Town Hall on Sunday, May 24th.  The parade included The Rochester Memorial School Band, the Rochester Firefighters, The Rochester Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts as well as the Rochester Girl Scouts and Brownies and Daisies.  The Town Selectmen as well as Representative Bill Straus read the names of the Veterans of Rochester who have ensured  our country’s freedom.  It is a Rochester tradition in every sense of the word.

Monday, May 25th brought the Rochester Memorial Day Boat Race.  It was a beautiful day for the race and 66 boats headed out from Gramma Hartley’s Reservoir, Snipatuit Rd. Rochester at one minute intervals starting at 8:30 AM.  They finished 2-4  hours later at the Mattapoisett Herring Run on Rt. 6, Mattapoisett.

The Awards ceremony was held at the Rochester Memorial School at 7:30 PM and was dedicated to the memory Charles “Chuck” Gonneville who was a custodian at the school and was an integral part of the Boat Race.  He was involved with every aspect of the planning and implementation of the race and he was sorely missed.  A flag was donated by the Shay family and hung in the gymnasium in memory of Chuck.  His family was present for the dedication.

The overall results for the race were:  First Place;  Billy Watling and Dave Lawrence, 2nd Place, Ian MacGregor and Jake Goyette and Third Place:  Andy Weigel and Jay Lawrence.  There were awards for Parent-Child, Co-Ed, Woman’s, Junior Girls and Boys, and Old Man of the River.

Spring Planting!

BOLD Moves Real Estate

It’s that time of year again!  Time for Spring Planting!  Now is a great time to purchase a hanging basket to brighten up your porch or front stairs.  Petunias are a great way to add color and should last all summer if you water them and pull off the dead flowers.

You can also bring out your pots or window boxes and plant some annuals for a great look to your house.  There is nothing like some colorful flowers in window boxes to brighten up your home.  You can mix different annuals in a large pot on your front steps with some greens to make your house look picture perfect.  You can also buy these at most landscaping stores ready-made if you have less than a green-thumb.

We are also approaching strawberry season. June is Strawberry season month. You can peruse a local farmstand or farmer’s market for the freshest, right off the field strawberry.  There is nothing sweeter than a berry fresh off the vine.  You can also grow your own strawberries fairly easily.  Strawberries grow well in raised beds and will come back every year.  You can thin them out when they put out runners and make a new patch of strawberries from the offshoots.   Thinning the strawberries periodically will help them produce better and make them easier to pick.

Now is also the time to be starting your vegetable garden.  The days are getting warmer as well as the soil.  You can start planting peas and potatoes and corn.  You can start getting your pepper and lettuce plants in the ground with the rest of your vegetables to follow.  Usually it’s a good idea to wait a couple of weeks to plant pumpkins or gourds that you won’t need to harvest until the fall.  This way they won’t be ready too early.

There is nothing like eating veggies fresh out of the garden and  much can be planted in a small space.  Just take note of which vegetables require less space such as lettuce or green beans and which will spread such as butternuts and pumpkins and plan accordingly.

Make the most of your spring and summer!

Toe Jam Puppet Band!

BOLD Moves Real Estate
Formed in 2000, the Toe Jam Puppet Band offers a special brand of hands-on children’s entertainment that grown-ups can actually enjoy. The Dynamic group is great with kids, but best when teachers or parents are having fun with the little ones. The performances are very active, encouraging kids and parents to sing and dance along with the band as they entertain with a unique combination of original songs, masterful shadow puppetry, storytelling and just plain old good fun.

With sponsorship from the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (MSPCC), the Toe Jam Puupet Band released their first CD in April 2002. Featuring 14 original songs, the CD seeks to replicate the nurturing hands-on interactivity of the playgroup experience that has made them so well loved by children, teachers and parents. In December 2003, Toejam released it’s 2nd CD entitled ‘Toejam Dance Party’ featuring some of their most popular songs, including: ‘Barn Dance’, ‘Block Cheese Dance Party’ and ‘Green Light A-Go-Go.’

From dance songs like Do the Conga, Barn Dance and Block Cheese Dance Party to interactive songs such asCar Wash the flying Laundryand the wacky bubble machine, everyone, young and old, can’t resist singing and dancing along. Plain old walls magically become a shadow puppet theater for Mr. Bun, Born a Bug, and various other puppet shows.
